Open-label study investigating the efficacy of octreotide in IIH in 26 patients

  • Overall, ~ 90% of patients (24 of 26) improved significantly.
  • Headache was relieved within days.
  • Papilledema subsided in all patients within two months.
  • Visual disturbances, initially presenting in two thirds of the patients, improved in 90%.
  • ICP was reduced by ~200 mm H2O.

Open-label study investigating the efficacy of octreotide in IIH in 5 IIH patients

  • Patients treated subcutaneously for 6 months – 
all were symptom free at the end of the treatment period.

Open-label pilot study investigating the efficacy of octreotide in IIH in 3 patients

  • Headaches were significantly ameliorated in all 3 patients within 10 days.
  • Two patients with visual acuity and fields deficits improved within 10 days and continued to improve after 3 months.
  • Two patients with papilledema showed substantial recovery by 3 months.
  • Two of the 3 patients showed a reduction in intracranial pressure (ICP).

Retrospective collection of 
case reports from 9 IIH patients treated with octreotide

  • Overall ~77% (7) of patients exhibited significant symptom reduction. This presented as substantial reduction in ICP and other symptoms, and improvement in secondary endpoints (headache, papilledema). Mean reduction in CSF pressure for responders was ~ 176 mm H2O.

Case report of a successful treatment of one patient with IIH

  • Marked improvement of symptoms, including visual field, headache and papilledema. Due to patient resistance to an LP, ICP was not measured following treatment.

Rapid remission of papilledema in a child with IIH after octreotide therapy

  • Complete remission of ophthalmologic findings within 3 weeks.

Although these were open-label trials

Measurement of intracranial pressure and changes in visual acuity are objective endpoints.
